All About Tennis Racquets – Tennis Quick Tips Podcast 43

June 9, 2014 by kselz

It's time for me to get a new tennis racquet!  I've had my current racquets for about three years and, with changes in technology and my own style of play, I've decided to start from scratch and get something completely new.  So in this episode, we'll start the process by learning all about the characteristics of tennis racquets.  You can listen to this episode by clicking on the media player above or by listening in with your favorite podcast app. You can also subscribe in iTunes by clicking on this link: tennisfixation.com/itunes.

SHOW NOTES:

I recently broke one of my tennis racquets by “firmly tapping” it on the court after flubbing a shot. Not only stupid, but embarrassing.  At my level, who breaks their racquet like that?

So it's time to start the process of getting a new racquet. Since my current racquets are about three years old, I've decided to start from scratch and go through the whole process of researching, demo-ing, and choosing a new racquet.

In this episode, I'm going to get the racquet hunt going by talking about everything you need to know about the types of tennis racquets out there. First, I'll discuss the three main types or categories of tennis racquets. These are:

  1. power racquets,
  2. control racquets, and
  3. tweener or in-between racquets.

I'll also explain the five qualities or characteristics of racquets within these categories that you should know. These are:

  1. head size,
  2. balance and weight,
  3. stiffness or flexibility,
  4. racquet length, and
  5. string pattern

By the end of this episode, you'll be able to talk about tennis racquets like you're a tennis pro!

Tennis Express has a great infographic that can help you choose exactly the right tennis racquet for your game.  You can click on the link in the resources I give below to get a printable pdf of this infographic.  Here's what it looks like:

This was very helpful, Kim, thank you! I had been confused about the Power-style racquet so that was especially a helpful clarification.

Hi Kim! Sounds like you have a lot of interest and do your home work about racquets. Have you ever heard of the International Alliance of Racquet Technicians? They are having a training symposium this September and have a terrific website with lots of resources for stringers, racquet techs, and even consumers. There are so many members with decades of experience that love to help out tennis players and fellow techs. Check it out some time http://www.gssalliance.com
