Happy US Open!

August 30, 2015 by kselz

The US Open is here! Hooray! The 2015 US Open officially starts today, Monday, August 31, and continues through September 13. I know I say that every Slam is my favorite Slam, but really, the US open is my favorite Slam. And this year that's true for a number of reasons.

Happy US Open!

First of all, Serena Williams just might complete a calendar year Grand Slam this year. The last woman to win a calendar year Grand Slam was Steffi Graf in 1988 so I'm pulling for Serena to do it this year.

Second, I am so hoping that this is Roger Federer's year to win another Slam. I just know he has at least one more in him and I'm feeling like it's going to happen at this year's US Open. I actually put $50 on Roger to win the US Open when I was recently in Las Vegas. That's how confident I am.

Here's some somewhat interesting US Open trivia for you. Did you know the US Open is the only Slam that uses a final set tiebreaker to decide the match? If the men's singles players go to a fifth set, or the women's singles players go to a third set, the set is decided in a tiebreaker. In the other three Slams, there is no final set tiebreaker – players win the set (and the match) by winning by two games. This is the kind of interesting stuff you can throw out to impress your tennis buddies. Either they'll be impressed or think you're a little too geeky with your tennis trivia.

And just who are our returning US Open champions? Well, here they are:

  • Men's Singles – Marin Cilic (Croatia)
  • Women's Singles – Serena Williams (United States)
  • Men's Doubles – Bob and Mike Bryan (United States)
  • Women's Doubles – Ekatrina Makarova and Elena Vesnina (Russia)
  • Mixed Doubles – Sonia Mirza (India) and Bruno Soares (Brazil)

Have fun watching the US Open – I know I will!

Happy Tennis! Kim
